What to Do and See
Driving through the French countryside is beautiful at any time of year. In spring there are yellow fields of oil seed rape and walls laden with wisteria. In summer, sunflowers fill the fields.
The beautiful small towns and villages boast a broad architectural history. Within the region there are more than 40 towns displaying modern and traditional crafts. Ceramics, glass, enamel, leather work, wood carving and painting are seen in museums and in artists’ colonies.
The Dordogne has several world famous prehistoric settlements. The cliff caves in the Vezère valley make a fascinating visit. The cave at Lascaux has an astonishing display of prehistoric art.
If you appreciate architecture, there are numerous fortresses, Romanesque abbeys and Renaissance châteaux to visit.
The region is a gourmet’s delight. You can enjoy shopping in the bustling markets. Many of the Dordogne and Charente vineyards are open for tastings.
